Welcome to the 2012-2013 Little Rock School District 5th Grade Math Wiki!5th Grade Mathematics Curriculum Map Overview for 2012-2013

On the menu to the left you will see a list of units for the 2012-13 school-year. When you open up each of these pages you will find the standards, resources and materials you will need to teach each unit. Most lessons in the unit are links to documents or websites, however, some of the problem-solving tasks are included on the curriculum map link which can be found within each unit. The lessons have been sequenced to build upon things learned in previous lessons, always looking for opportunities to take students to a deeper level. You may also decide to choose lessons you find elsewhere that address the standards in a rigorous, problem-solving manner.

We have included additional lesson resources on the wiki, found in the various links on the left side of the page. Practice will be very important for student mastery. In previous years there were so many learning standards that teachers had to press forward even when students could have benefitted from more time spent on certain concepts. The new expectation for the common core standards is mastery. Each unit has several standards that will be addressed through problem-solving, exercises (practice), and mathematical games. Number talks will be used in the warm-up.

Before each unit, it will be important to collaborate with your colleagues to study the standards, rationale and background information in order to understand the goals for your students. The backward design process is a wonderful tool for helping your team plan for and prepare a unit of study.
